Almost Home isn’t just a rescue — it’s a community.

It started as an idea among a compassionate group of volunteers who saw a different path forward. They envisioned a space that prioritized the emotional and physical well-being of every cat, cages not included. Bonded by the conviction that this work could and should be done differently, Almost Home Cat Rescue MKE was formed. Built from the ground up, this belief has helped us save the lives of hundreds of cats and kittens.

Our rescue continues to thrive because of people like you — those who believe in doing things “the better way.” From daily cleaning crews to remote grant writers, every volunteer is a vital part of the community that makes these second chances possible. Ready to help us make a difference?

The Nitty Gritty: Volunteer Guidelines

  • "The founders truly care... the Medical Officer is exceptionally devoted."

When I come into AHCR, the cats and kittens look at me with love in their eyes. They know that I love each and every one of them, even the shy ones, and I'm there to take care of them. AHCR is miles above other shelters, giving the cats so much space to roam, climb, and play without cages. It is kept spotlessly clean and in good repair. The founders truly care about each and every cat. The Medical Officer is exceptionally devoted to their health and well-being.

  • "...the people at AHCR are some of the best I know."

My favorite part about volunteering at Almost Home Cat Rescue is helping care for and give a voice/safe space to cats and kittens. It’s such a rewarding cause and experience to see them thrive before and on their way to their new homes, and the people at AHCR are some of the best I know.

  • "...the impact I can make on cats and my community."

I love volunteering with Almost Home because of the impact I can make on cats and my community. I appreciate the flexibility that the shelter offers. I'm able to share my ideas and have them heard and brought to life, helping to support the mission further.

  • "...share my love with cats and kittens after we lost our cat, Sassy."

I started visiting Almost Home and then volunteering as a way to share my love with cats and kittens after we lost our last cat, Sassy. I particularly like working with cats that are shy, withdrawn, or nervous about their new surroundings at the shelter, getting them socialized and comfortable with interacting with people, so that they can then move on to their adoptive homes. They get some love and care, and I get my "cat fix!”

  • "It's an easy and rewarding way to help..."

We enjoy volunteering with Almost Home for several reasons. Its an easy and rewarding way to help, and everyone is so friendly. We look forward to our shifts, especially the chance to play with and cuddle cute cats and kittens, it's like our reward!

  • "Almost Home is serious about community and culture... I have so much respect for them!"

I love volunteering at Almost Home Cat Rescue because it provides me with the opportunity to give back to a community that I care about. There is a feeling of selfless accomplishment and pride when I finish cleaning one of the cat rooms and get to spend time giving these amazing cats love and attention that they deserve. This rescue is also so unique in that there are no cages and every cat they take in is given so much love and care by this amazing team. Almost Home is serious about community and culture at rescues and I have so much respect for them!

  • "...the time you get to spend with the cats is priceless."

I chose to volunteer with Almost Home Cat rescue because I love cats and I thought it would be a good opportunity to get in some extra kitty cuddles while giving back to the community. The people at the shelter are incredibly kind and welcoming, and you can tell everyone has a real affinity for animals and their well-being. Almost Home's cage-free layout is very unique and allows people to make instant bonds with the cats — something I've loved witnessing during my time as a volunteer. If you're on the fence about applying, I say "go for it!” The process is easy, the schedule is flexible, and the time you get to spend with the cats is priceless.
