Before you surrender
We understand that sometimes cat parents find themselves in a situation where they believe they cannot keep their cat. Before you make the final decision to surrender your cat, please consider the following:
When you surrender a cat to any shelter, the transition can be difficult. Shelters are stressful environments for even the most well-adjusted animal.
Contact the shelter, rescue or breeder where you initially got your cat. Most adoption contracts require you to contact them before surrendering or re-homing your cat.
Undetected medical issues can often cause sudden behavior changes. Contact your veterinarian to rule out possible medical issues your cat may be experiencing.
Consult a trainer or behaviorist for help with common behavioral problems.
Reach out to friends and family members to determine if they would be willing to take responsibility of your cat, or offer assistance to you to help you through a tough time.
Surrender process
If you have exhausted all other options, you can surrender your cat to Almost Home Cat Rescue MKE. Please complete a surrender form for each cat that your request to be surrendered.
We have a $50 non-refundable fee per cat to offset the cost of their care while they are with us. This must be paid to be admitted to the waiting list for review and entry. We are not an emergency shelter and all intake appointments need to be scheduled. Once that is done and you have a confirmed intake time, please keep your cat in a secure carrier for transport and arrival.
What to bring
Current photo ID
Your cat’s veterinary records and/or the name of the vet where they were last seen
Any behavioral or training records
Proof of payment
Please provide as much information as you can about your cat; this will help us make an informed decision about the most compatible new home. Shelter staff can give you more information about the evaluation and adoption process.
